Food fine but a disappointing experience

Rating: 5

jbimrosebrown attended Monograph - Contemporary Japanese Supper Club in November 2014, reviewed on 16 November 2014

Having eaten at one amazing supper club, we were excited about sharing this one with a friend for her birthday.

The food was interesting and well presented but overall the experience was a disappointment. They held the supper club in a small cafe and we were extremely packed in, with additional guests squeezed onto the end of the table even once all the chairs were full.

It would have been nice to have heard a bit more about the food and felt less like they were trying to make as much money as possible by having so many people there.

A stark contrast to the warm and intimate reception we had received from previous hosts.

Monograph responded on 1 December 2014:

Hi,

Sorry for our delay in reply and thank you for your review.
We are always happy to receive comments, either positive or negative, as there is always a chance to improve and learn from them.
We are, of course, sorry to hear about your disappointment.
We do agree that the current venue is quite small. The popularity of our supper club has grown incredibly fast and we are still in the process of searching for a bigger venue.
The primary reason behind the choice of having a large number of guests is to keep the ticket price low.
We could easily reduce the number of guests and raise the ticket price, like even suggested by some of the previous guests, and it would still appear a reasonable price for a Japanese dinner, considering the high prices of the imported Japanese ingredients.
But we personally believe that dining experiences should be affordable and not a luxury, and we like to see our ideal guest as passionate and sensitive rather then wealthy.

We also agree that we should give more information about the dishes.
Due to the choice of sometimes complex preparations and due to the limits of the kitchen, we are always extremely busy from start to finish and hardly manage to talk to guests.
We are thinking about printing informative cards to give with each course; We have no idea if it is going to work or not but we may give it a try soon.

Please do feel free to contact us at monograph@monographlondon.com if you would like to give us a second chance and we'll send you a special invitation when we are confident to have solved the issues reported.

Thank you,

Kind regards.

Lovely evening!!

Need to improve some details but for beginners, very good overall.
We will comeback for sure!

I went to the first supper club by monograph. Bearing in mind they are learning as they go along, I thought the event was a success. 14 people around one table. We were encouraged to introduce ourselves to each other which was a nice touch and didnt feel forced. By the end of the evening it was quite a din - the sign of a very relaxed and informal crowd. Now to the food: these guys are experimenting but are craftspeople and take food seriously.. Its not fusion food but you will get a non japanese ingredient thrown in. Most dishes hit the spot for me with flavour. The plates and bowls they use are beautiful. Its the imperfections of the cafe we were in add to the charm
