South Indian cookery is full of flavour and nutritious. Contrary to the belief that Masala Dosa is complicated to make at home; we will be showing you just how easy it is to prepare this fantastic food at home. With a little pre planning and easily accessible ingredients, you will be able to create this comforting food at home. 

Dosa is a staple in South Indian cuisine. It is eaten for breakfast and can be a filling lunch too. 

Lemon Rice is another simple yet delicious South Indian delicacy. It is best enjoyed with the Keralan Fish curry. 

Once you learn to prepare these authentic dishes, you will be ready to impress your family and friends with your newly found culinary skills!

You will learn in your teacher's kitchen the art of dosa making and lots more delicious recipes. Learn under the expert guidance of MasterChef quarter finalist-Rani. Take home the delicious food enough for two people and culinary skills for life!

 

In this class you will be learning some popular south Indian dishes such as:

1) Dosa 

2) Keralan Fish Curry

3) Preparing a spice blend

4) Dosa Aloo

5) Lemon Rice

 

Skills you will learn:

  1. Making a versatile curry base from scratch
  2. Serving suggestions
  3. Cooking perfect rice which retains the nutrients by absorption method
  4. Preparing ginger and garlic pastes
  5. Introduction to spices
  6. Information on sourcing and storing spices
  7. Tips for substituting ingredients
  8. Tips on cooking the food faster
  9. Basic knife skills and kitchen/food safety information

 This hands on  class offers you the opportunity to learn the basics and the traditional cooking techniques in the relaxed and informal atmosphere of a home kitchen.

You will learn to balance the flavours by combining the spices and herbs which will produce amazing food using simple everyday ingredients. You will have plenty of opportunity to ask questions during the class, as you will have an added benefit of having the teacher guiding and explaining the procedure with you throughout the class, making it your very own private class!

Your day will comprise of a mixture of hands on cookery and demonstration. You will be introduced to the class menu and a general introduction to the key spices in Indian cookery. You will then start cooking under the expert guidance of MasterChef 2014 Quarter Finalist Rani; learning everything you need to know to enable you to create an authentic Indian meal, classes include all ingredients, containers, utensils, aprons for the class, and recipes. You will taste the food as we go and will also be given the food that you have created during the lesson enough for two people and a skill to last you a lifetime.

If you wish to learn a vegetarian version of the fish curry, please inform us at the time of booking.

All levels welcome. Participants must be aged 16 and over.

Lovely Indian Cooking Class

My partner and I spent a great 3 hours with Rani - just the 3 of us in her own kitchen at home. Rani was welcoming, very open to questions, clear and obviously very skilled in preparing delicious food. We helped prepare the potato filling for masala dosa, made the dosas themselves, some lemon rice and an excellent Keralan fish curry. We were able to taste the food as we cooked it and then bring home enough for a meal. Overall, the session was very well organised and exceeded our expectations - I'd happily recommend it to anyone wanting to gain skills in this kind of cooking. The class we took was South Indian Specialities, but Rani also offers several others.

This is my second cookery class with Rani (the first was Indian street food starters). She is a great teacher - warm, friendly and patient. Her cookery knowledge seems boundless and she makes the best tasting Indian food I've ever had - and now I can cook (some of it) myself! The class price is very reasonable, especially when you consider you get to take home enough fantastic curry for two people.
