Born and bred in Kuala Lumpur, Guan currently resides in London and is a former Finance Analyst turned Le Cordon Bleu trained chef & Supper Club host. He also writes a food & travel blog, theboywhoatetheworld.com.
Guan recently contested on Channel 4’s ‘The Taste‘, a new TV cookery competition where he was mentored by American chef turned food writer and television personality Anthony Bourdain. The show also featured British food writer Nigella Lawson & Los Angeles chef Ludo Lefebvre as the other celebrity mentors.
A passionate ambassador of Malaysian food, Guan hosts regular Supper Clubs in London specializing in ‘Nyonya’ cuisine, a subset of Malaysian food from his family heritage that brings the best of Malay and Chinese food cultures together. He has also conducted live cooking demonstrations for Malaysian cuisine at festivals and trade fairs such as the BBC Good Food Show.

Despite having travelled the world in search of the best eats and completing my culinary training at Le Cordon Bleu, there’s still no cuisine closer to my heart than the Malaysian Nyonya food I grew up eating as a little boy back home.
Also known as Straits Chinese or Peranakan cuisine, the term ‘Nyonya’ generally refers to the descendants of 15th and 16th century Chinese immigrants who moved to Malaya from Southern China. As they settled in Malaya, a new breed of Malaysian cuisine combining Chinese and Malay influences emerged, incorporating local ingredients such as chillies, lemongrass, galangal, fermented shrimp paste (‘belacan’), tamarind and turmeric amongst others. All this makes for food with a balance, depth and complexity of flavours like no other.
Growing up in Kuala Lumpur, I was lucky enough to be nurtured with some of the finest Nyonya cuisine in the comfort of our family dining table, all lovingly prepared by my godmother who hails from Penang. I’ve spent many a vacation back home watching her at work in the kitchen, soaking up recipes and techniques that have been passed down through the generations. And it’s through my various Supper Clubs and Pop Ups that I hope to share my passion for all things Nyonya over a multi-course tasting menu.
