Welcome to my Taiwanese 'Bān-Doh' in my North London home!
Bān-Doh literally translates to 'set up a table'. It is an old fashion Taiwanese banquet style that can be traced back to the seventeenth century! The original way to set up a bān-doh was in someone's home, could be indoor or outdoor or sometimes even on the streets with a marquee, few round tables and few folding chairs. Everyone eats and shares the food like one big family. Basically Taiwanese people have been setting up trendy supper clubs for hundreds of years and didn't even know it!
I'd like to invite you to our home to get a taste of Taiwanese food and hospitality. Taiwanese cuisine has many influences especially from China and Japan and since yours truly grew up in California, I also draw inspirations from the West.
Here's a sample of what you will be tasting on the night:
Cold Starter
- Shredded bean curd, carrots, celery, sesame oil - Quit hoggin' it!
Drunken chicken with Shaoxing wine, goji berries, date - Kids shouldn't have this...
Main
Fried chicken bites, house seasoning, crispy basil - One in every corner!
Stirfry Morning Glory - Next best thing instead of sweet potato leaves...
Red Braised Pork Shank, bamboo shoots, seasonal greens - This will bring you good fortune
Soup - TBD - But always something comforting for your bellies!
Dessert - TBD - Could be Asian, could be Western, be surprised!
And so much more!
Drink Suggestions (this is a BYOB event):
Taiwanese food is commonly eaten with cold beer. If you prefer wine, white wine like Sauvignon Blanc or Pinot Grigio would be suitable. And if you REALLY want to do the dinner the real Taiwanese way...Johnny Walker whiskey is the chosen poison!
So join us for a night of gluttony, random story telling and an abundance of food!
Note:
Taiwanese cuisine uses a lot of soy/wheat/gluten/sesame based products so unfortunately, at this time I am not able to cater to diners with specific dietary requirement. I do apologize if this causes inconvenience to some.
