Chaotic fun

Rating: 6

We had a huge class of 17 or so people, and only one host/teacher, so it was a bit chaotic with people chatting and going at different paces. We also had a mix up with some ingredients so we didn't end up eating until 10pm. Regardless of the chaos, and slightly stressed teacher, we had a fun night. It was great to eat self-made dim sum, and understand how they are all put together, learn some cultural tips etc.

Other comments:

Make sure you take an apron or clothes you don't mind getting mince or flour all over.

There was no bar as advertised, but there was a bottle shop up the road, so a few of us ran up and grabbed some beverages.

My advice to Will would be - make sure you have a helper, particularly if you have such a big group. Start with an intro and instructions then read out etiquette tips and facts throughout the night while we are eating or waiting for the food to steam. Start with the hardest dim sum first, while people are still excited and focused. Perhaps even skip the dough making and pre-make this. I think most people will probably just buy their dough pre-made and packaged, particularly given the ingredients are so hard to find... it might give you more time to talk about the interesting facts, and your own story - which people would be very interested to hear.

My friend and I had a lovely time. We made delicious dim sum dishes (if I say so myself), and the atmosphere was nice and relaxed. We're looking forward to the more detailed notes which the organiser promised to send us next week or so, and will try to make them at home too.
