hosted by Wise Up To Health
Sylvia Onusic, PhD, of Taste of Slovenia will give a talk on Slovenian food and wine, with samples to taste and to drink. Don’t know where Slovenia is? At the crossroads of Europe, Slovenia borders on Austria, Italy, Hungary and Croatia. Some of the neighbouring culinary traditions flavour Slovenian foods but the traditional foods and foodways are quite unique. The climates and soils favour fabulous wine production at the Coast on the Med, and on the Pannonian Plains in the northeast, but there are thousands of vineyards in this small nation of 2 million. Growing grapes and making wines are the national pastimes. Naturally- produced prosciutto, and other charcuterie, fish, an abundance of fresh fruit and vegetables, and artisan cheeses make up the vibrant food scene. Slovenian farmers frown upon the use of GMOs and chemicals, the low-fat diet is a myth, artisans abound, and people take pride in food production. It’s made in Slovenia. “Domače!”
From the widely available healthy fermented vegetables and sauerkraut found in all their markets and home kitchens, to the raw milk available from vending machines throughout, to the lavender fields of the Karst, small mountain farms producing cheeses, salamis, buckwheat bread and raw honey, you will be transported to another age, when food was real, and sustainably produced. We will have Slovenian wines to try and tastings of some other foods.
Sylvia Onusic is a nutritionist and Slovenian-American from the US who spreads the word about this “hidden gem in Europe” by leading culinary tours called “Taste of Slovenia.” She is also a frequent contributor to the Weston A. Price Foundation quarterly journal, "Wise Traditions".
In this talk you will see some of the places she visits, from small farms to world- renowned vineyards, and feel the friendliness of the people, as well as feast your eyes on the fabulous architectural heritage, and amazing natural beauty of the county.
